As an elderly person, I had some doubts about undertaking a six week fitness course with Spectrum; however, I had known Michael Stare for some time and was impressed with his knowledge of the human body. At any rate, I did enter one of his programs and as they say, it is never too late to learn. Over the years, I had been relatively active having at times engaged in jogging, tennis, bicycling, cross-country skiing, etc. But, I was not involved with much resistance training.
In addition to warm-up procedures, corrective exercises, stretching and interval surges, Mike introduced me to several methods of resistance training, which he designed while always being cognizant of injury prevention. Mike would make sure he was totally informed as to any medical conditions, which might be negatively affected by any of the procedures. In addition, the Spectrum trainer and nutritionist, Michelle, would constructively critique my nutritional history in order to set me on the path to more beneficial eating habits.
I think overall, what I have learned is that engaging in aerobic exercise is only one part of achieving fitness, and during my sessions with Mike, I found that I was using muscles long passive over the years; those muscles seem to respond to the exercises and contribute to achieving some improvement to fitness. Five years ago I had three children under the age of three. My body was a wreck with years of recovery ahead of me. I was constantly tired while trying to keep up with my little ones and while my body was trying to recover from my births. Finding myself at 190 pounds, I first attempted to lose some weight with Weight Watchers. Although I was able to lose most of the pregnancy weight, I never reached my pre-pregnancy weight or size. As the years past, I tried to follow what I’ve learned with Weight Watchers to maintain my size 14 figure and weight of 165 to 170.
Eight weeks ago I started this program to help support my husband, Josh. My expectations was that I may lose a couple of pounds and learn some new ways to maintain my current size. I met Dave and he told me I would lose close to 20 pounds and I thought he was crazy! I didn’t realize that I had that much weight to come off me, never mind losing weight that fast. Apparently I was very comfortable with my body and did not see the possibility of being any different size or shape then I was. Well Dave proved not be crazy and actually helped me to get my weight down to what it was before children. This program managed to get the attention of all of my friends, family, and strangers who have noticed my body change.
I am very thankful for all of the wonderful advice and tips on how to eventually reach my ideal goal. It is amazing how eight weeks has changed my outlook on what my goal should be and how easy it will be to get there as long as I stay consistent with the tools that the program laid out for me. Since having children, I have struggled with my weight. I tried many diet/exercise plans, sometimes losing 10-20 pounds, but always gaining it back, plus more. My energy was low and I had multiple orthopedic issues that limited me from doing many things with my family and friends. I couldn’t stand shopping for clothes for fear that I wouldn’t fit in anything. This summer I really felt like I had hit an all time low and was determined to turn it around for myself and my family. I finally feel that I have figured it out with the Body Balance Challenge.
The staff has taught me the tools to safely lose weight and keep it off, along with learning how to efficiently and safely exercise. I learned that many of my beliefs about weight loss and exercise were wrong. Everything that they do is backed up by research which really makes you feel confident that you are doing the right thing. One of my biggest fears is reinjuring myself. Although, I still struggle with this, I am more willing to try more physical activities now that I am stronger and weigh less.
Nothing is more gratifying, when someone compliments me on my weight loss. I have gone down two clothing sizes and now love to go clothes shopping. More importantly, I have more energy to do things with my family. I feel healthier and have less pain in my back, hips and knees. This program is a commitment, but if you put in the effort and stick with it, you will be glad you did. I know I am.
This was my 1st BBC. I didn’t come into it with too many expectations. I just wanted to make it through the 8 weeks. Wes got me to try it (I was not coerced) and I’m glad I did. Doing this program with my partner was the best way I can imagine being on a diet program. Not only did I have the check-ins and accountability with Spectrum but I had it every day with Wes and vice versa. We pushed each other, supported each other, and encouraged each other to reach our goals. It was extremely successful. I enjoyed the fact that6 we had to food log knowing someone would be evaluating it. When I say I enjoyed it I really mean it was effective. This time has not been as much of a struggle as I thought it might be. It wasn’t easy but it was completely doable. Plus, seeing results every 2 weeks was added motivation. I am now down 2 pants sizes, and about 10lbs body fat. I feel healthy and get compliments from people all the time about how good I look. It feels awesome knowing that others are noticing the same results that I am! I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who just needs that extra push to get them going. This is a welcoming group of people to work with who really have your best interests and health in mind.

I joined the BBC to get my health and my wife’s health back on track. We needed a catalyst. The BBC challenge is not a quick fix fad diet. It is a program that does certainly help you in the short term, but also sets you up for long term success. While I haven’t been 100% perfect, I have had great success following the diet program that was set for me. Weight has been a constant struggle throughout my life. I am a human yo-yo. Most recently, my struggle has been being the only one dieting in a house of 5. BBC gave my wife and me something to learn and work towards together. We are now on the same page and can work towards our goals using the knowledge and programs that were provided to us during the program. A lot of the nutritional education and theories were certainly eye opening to the both of us. It certainly has helped to have that support system under the same roof.
The biggest benefit of the BBC is that it is not a cookie cutter solution. This program is customized to the individual’s body and lifestyle. If you do not hit your goals, you are not chastised. Instead, Spectrum looks at why we didn’t hit the goals and what adjustments we can make to ensure it doesn’t happen again. They have heard every excuse and can combat them with a reasonable suggestion.
I would certainly endorse the BBC to anyone contemplating taking the journey. My advice would be to stay open minded and commit to the schedule. My best results occurred when I was locked in to both the diet and exercise. The program works, the only obstacle is getting in the proper mindset.
“I have been living with a persistent back issue for most of my life. For years I would try to establish a work-out routine for myself, which eventually would end with my back going out, pain and visits to the chiropractor. Frustration led me to Spectrum to learn how to work out properly, educate myself on the correct way to exercise with my limitations, and establish a successful routine I could incorporate into my life-style.
Working with the Spectrum staff was amazing. What I think I liked best was that as I learned an exercise, the trainer explained what the particular exercise was targeting and why it would benefit me with my issues. The attention to my personal needs was the main reason I came to Spectrum and each trainer I worked with gave that attention and dedication to me at each and every workout.
It is amazing what a proper exercise routine can do for your quality of life. I now understand what I can, and (most importantly) cannot do, for exercises. I feel stronger and more flexible in all activities, from simply carrying laundry baskets up and down stairs, to my golf game. Being able to do these things without the worry of “what will happen to my back if I do this or that” is the best feeling!
I was worried about two things when I started my program: 1) could this really work for me? and 2) would I actually make working out a part of my life? Dave had said to me when I first met with him “you will find that becoming stronger and feeling healthy and fit will be addicting, and that will help drive your desire to work out”. He was absolutely right! Now that I feel stronger and fit (and actually look stronger and fit) I don’t want to lose it. And it’s easier than I thought it would be. Dave and the trainers were able to show me how to effectively work a routine into my life so that it wasn’t such an overwhelming prospect. It’s different for everyone — and the camaraderie that we developed during my workouts helped the trainers to understand my lifestyle and how to make a workout successful for me.”
When having the blood test for Mayo Clinic, my Dr order another basic blood test. This time, the LDL was 159! ( down from 180 something just a week later). When I asked for an explanation, no one had one. At this point, I decided that I know I exercise, eat well, sleep like a baby and am pretty happy, so I am not in need of any drugs!
On another note: My husband Whit and I hiked in Ireland for 15 days, covering appox 150 miles, possible due to my training at Spectrum and attention to the injury that needed professional skills to overcome. This is the kind of attention and results I have always counted on and received from everyone I have worked w/at Spectrum over the years. It was a trip of a life time! Thank you to all and I am pleased that Spectrum is growing while keeping the standards high!

Hey Mike, I just stumbled onto an article you wrote for T Nation about lower back pain and wanted to say THANK YOU! I’ve been struggling with some major lower back issues after training twice a day for a few months (crossfit & Olympic lifting) crept up on me out of nowhere. I’ve seen half a dozen osteos, physios, sports therapists and acupuncturists.. all of them seemed to be able to give me tons of stretches and movements to use at home and the gym but none were all that feasible for work. (unfortunately splaying out on the ground at my office is less than ideal). I sit at my desk for 8-9 hours a day and walking around every 30 mins wasn’t doing the trick and usually by 2 in the afternoon I’d be in some sort of pain
Anyway, your article has such simple ideas for deloading while at work and holy crap – they work!.
My dad currently weighs 196! He states that he was 228 the last time he met with you and that your goal was for him to get to 200. (and was 270 to when he started!) He was on 2 diabetes medications and 4 heart medications the last time you met. Currently, he is no longer on any diabetes medications and using only 1 of the heart medications. His doctor plans to take him off the heart medications completely at his next appointment in August. His doctor also asked his permission to use his case to present at a convention to show what can be accomplished with lifestyle changes at his age.
On father’s day, he played 18 holes of golf with his best friend and had already golfed two times earlier in the week. Last year, he was unable to play golf at all and then only 9 holes as he started to improve. He states he feels strong and has minimal pain in his hip. He states he is doing his exercises at a much higher level than he was doing the last time you two met.
I don’t have as many stats on my mom as she is not so forth coming with things like weight obviously. However, it took her a long time to buy into the changes my father started and she fought against it for quite some time. Even when she started to give in it was only in small increments. Previously, she was a size 22 and is now down to a 16!!. She is now much more invested in the changes and working to improve. For the first time she actually asked my wife for help to find a dress for a wedding because she wanted it to be something current and that showed her off instead of hiding her body. She is proud of how she looks and feels better too.
My parents are now supporting each other and trying to improve as much as they can. I really don’t know how to get across to you what this means to me. Without a doubt, you have always been the one person in the industry who I have felt complete confidence to send anyone to for help. You have a 100% track record for satisfaction with every single person I have ever sent. My parents were going to be the long shots that ruined your stats. My expectations were low on what you could accomplish, but I still wanted them in the right hands. You hit it out of the park with them and have truly given them a new life!

Hi Mike, I wanted to let you know that I have modified my usual routine at the gym to follow your instructions. I used to hit the cross trainer for 30-40 minutes at a steady pace, and then lift or nautilus. I would get exhausted and my joints began to hurt.
Anyway, I started to do the dynos, and resistance, followed by cross trainer intervals. I can barely get through 6 minutes of intervals! It feels much better, less exhausting and more effective. Don’t get me wrong, I still curse you out☺ but wanted to let you know, I am impressed.

Hi Dave, Things are going well! I have lost 25lbs total and started to get back on a bicycle! That was one of my goals. I find it hard to get the gym 3 times a week in the summer, especially in July but I am trying to get back on track as I would like to lose another 25 lbs by Christmas!
I am still so appreciative of your time and efforts in helping me get on track. I feel so much better this summer and look forward to improving even more, the nutrition tips have helped me change my eating habits for the better. You have a great attitude and are non-threatening to people who lack athletic habits (like me). My ankle is much stronger my hip better but not perfect.

Before I met you, I had been in severe pain 24 hours a day since 1998. I had been diagnosed with severe degenerative disc disease, and a broken clavicle that had never healed properly because the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery had never x-rayed it until it was too late. It’s been a never ending battle with my weight problems! I have consistently gained 10 lbs every year for the past 10 years. In the last few years, I have experienced infertility and thyroid issues. During this time, my vocabulary increased to include terms like “goblet squats, walking lunges, deadlifts, planks”, and my personal favorite, terminal hip extensions”. This summer, after months of physical therapy following serious shoulder surgery, I had the gift of working with the trainers at Spectrum Fitness. Over the course of several weeks, I learned how to conduct safe exercise routines and I began to regain my strength. Because I had a lot of apprehension about resuming my physical exercise (outside of the physical therapy venue), it was important for me to work with knowledgeable professionals. After experiencing a lot of pain over the last years of my life, and experiencing the subsequent surgery, I realized I needed some up-to-date education as well as to feel safe. I learned about proper form and when I had pain while performing the prescribed exercises I was taught how to modify my position. Happily, I gained strength pretty quickly and ma now working out on my own with renewed confidence. In addition to the regular exercise program, I was asked to keep a food journal, which resulted in more self-awareness about what I was eating. Helpful suggestions were made so that I could begin to incorporate some positive adjustments to my diet. Although none of this is easy, it was made less challenging when showing up week to week to talk about progress, review questions and receive a pat on the back. This informed practice at Spectrum Fitness is incredibly valuable, especially for those of us who have experienced injury or surgery I can sincerely recommend these services to anyone needing solid fitness education in tandem with confident guidance.
